The goal of the course is to provide students with knowledge of developmental issues in Latin America, as well as the role of institutions in regional development. Discussed topics include: the colonial legacy of Latin America, state building challenges, the role of the armed forces in Latin American politics, the Latin American school of development, integration processes in Latin America, contemporary trends and challenges for the region. Upon completion of the course, students should understand the developmental path of Latin America, recognize the links between economic development and political stability, and be able to discuss the most pressing challenges that the region faces and identify their impact on development.
