The complexity of challenges for EU-China relations in a turbulent world

The aim of The complexity of challenges for EU-China relations in a turbulent world project is to create an international, interdisciplinary research group, in Partnership with the University of Rostock, whose envisaged result is to submit a joint project application within an external institution on the research on the complexity of challenges of EU-China relations in the context of the current crises.

The premise of this research is the observation of the ongoing broadly understood social changes in European societies in regard to the transformation of conceptual categories exemplified by cultural, social, political and economic aspects of the relationship between China and the EU in the context of crisis complexity modeling.

EU-China relations, even without considering the impact of external factors, like the war in Ukraine or Covid pandemics, need to be analyzed from many perspectives (politics, economics, international relations, security, culture) and fields (social sciences: ‘political and administrative sciences’; ‘international relations’; ‘economics and finance’; ‘security studies’; regional studies). The methodology that should be adopted must reflect the subject of the research thus the main research perspective of the project is the complex systems approach, which allows for studying the transformations of the international arena from many variables determining turbulence in the system (crises).

The main hypothesis is that the current EU-China relations are being negatively influenced by the ongoing Russian war in Ukraine and the impact of the global pandemic on European societies. In this regard, the research question is raised as to how to theoretically and practically incorporate the phenomena of the current crisis in all its complexity into the model of future EU relationship with China.

The established research team will strengthen the level of international cooperation leading to the development of further international projects, thus increasing the internationalization of our Faculty. The project due to the engagement of students is set to improve the quality of education through the implementation of a research-driven educational approach.

The project obtained financial support from the resources within the program “Excellence Initiative – Research University” at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow.
