Shiyu Li holds an MA in Political Science (2019, specialization in Eastern European and Russian Studies) at Vilnius University (Lithuania) and another MA in International Relations at Central European University (2020, Budapest/Vienna). In addition, Shiyu interned at the Institute of International Relations Prague from March to June 2019.

In September 2020, Shiyu obtained the Belt and Road Initiative Scholarship from the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) for the PhD project titled "China's Relations with the Countries of Central and Eastern Europe: A New Model for Region-Building or Yet Another Great Game." During the 2020/2021 academic year, Professor Emilian Kavalski was Shiyu's lead supervisor at UNNC.
