Roundtable: Narrating the ’new silk road’ – Socialist Rule of Law with Chinese Characteristics in the BRI and its Implications for the EU

The Centre for International Studies and Development would like to invite you to the roundtable Narrating the ’new silk road’ – Socialist Rule of Law with Chinese Characteristics in the BRI and its Implications for the EU. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has been systematically reshaping conventional ideas and concepts by attaching the label "with Chinese characteristics," frequently resulting in significant alterations to their original meanings. In doing so it is elevating China to a position of international influence commensurate with its economic and military leverage. The inception of the trillion dollar Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the increasing effort to disseminate Chinese values and ideas within the international community are building blocks to cultivate an alternative system of global governance that aligns with Beijing and propagates Chinese views and values. The roundtable will explore how this has developed in recent years and what this means for the EU in a period where many European leaders are calling for “de-risking” from China.

Participants:

  • Dr Joanna Ciesielska-Klikowska, Department of Asian Studies, University of Lodz, Poland;
  • Dr Martin Lavička, Department of Asian Studies, Palacký University Olomouc, Czech Republic and a Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies, Lund University, Sweden;
  • Mr Hassan al Said, PhD student, Regional Studies of China, University of Cologne, Germany;
  • Dr David O’Brien, CISAD, Jagiellonian University (moderator).

The event will take place on March 08 (Friday), in the Faculty of International and Political Studies (4 Reymonta St., Krakow), room 207, at 12:30.

You are cordially invited to participate in the event!
