International Organizations – Theory and Practice

The objective of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the role and activities of international organisations (IOs) in the early 21st century. The course introduces students to the theories and principles of IOs, as well as the issues which they are trying to address. While the course’s core focus will be on the investigation of the structures and roles of the United Nations (UN) system (e.g. Security Council, Peacekeeping Operations, Human Rights), it will also deal with the role of regionalism and regional organisations as another important dimension of international organisations as a whole, as well as their relationship with the UN. The course will conclude by discussing the future of IOs.
